French Vocabulary 5 False Cognates to Watch Out For Megan L. Cognates are words that sound similar and can mean the same thing across different languages. However, in French, there are some tricky cognates that dont mean what you might think they mean. French tutor  Carol Beth L.  shares five common French false cognates Due to their similar roots, French and English share some vocabulary and grammar. La table is table, la geographie is geography, and un film is a film â€" otherwise known as a movie. Similar word pairs between two languages are known as cognates. Not all such similar words mean the same thing, however, so watch out, or some pairs may trick you! These false cognates â€" also known as “false friends” sound alike but dont actually mean the same thing. Here are a few notable examples. 1) Une librarie Would you normally expect to pay to use the books in une librarie? In France, yes. Une librarie is a bookstore, while a library is une bibliothèque. 2) Football Football sounds a lot like the American sport “football.” Like football, football is also in fact quite popular in France. But when the French play football, there are no yardage lines on the field, and the field goals have nets and no poles â€" because in fact the French word football actually refers to “soccer.” Our version of football is called le football américain, or American football. 3)  Attendre Attendre sounds like the English verb “to attend.” Logically, jattends le concert would mean “Im attending the concert,” right? Well, not quite. Attendre actually means to wait, so, jattends le concert  actually means “Im waiting for the concert.” So if attendre doesnt mean to attend, how do you say to attend in French? The French verb is assister. If you want to say you are attending the concert, say jassiste au concert. “But wait,” you say. “That sounds like the English verb to assist meaning to help.” Not quite. So then what about to assist or to help? This one actually makes some sense. The French verb is aider, and you can actually see the word “aid” (also meaning to help) in its root. Je taide dans ton jeu de football,  translates to “Ill help you in your soccer game.” 4)  Actuellement Actuellement, je fais mes devoirs. Of course youve probably guessed by now that this sentence doesnt mean youre actually doing your homework â€" except it kind of actually does, indirectly. This sentence quite simply says that youre doing your homework right now, because actuellement means currently or right now. After all, if youre doing them now, you are actually doing them, right? At any rate, both meanings make sense in many situations, so someone who doesnt realize the distinction might not catch on to their mistake in conversation. If you really want to say actually and truly that youre doing something, try using en faite (actually) or véritablement (really / truly). 5)  Blesser In French, blesser  means to wound or hurt someone, not to bless them. So be careful; if you want to look out for their physical and spiritual well-being, it might be wiser to ask a priest, rabbi, monk, or other spiritual leader for a bénédiction (a blessing). Or you can use the verb bénir (to bless) to express what youd like him to do. These are only a few examples, but nonetheless take heed! French can be easier than some languages because it has some similarities with English, but it can also be tricky. When in doubt, look it up, and dont let any of its false friends trick you! Our expectations motivate us and drive us to do things both good and bad. We might expect a great time at a party or expect to get bored at grandmas. We have expectations of all sorts at work. We have expectations of our peers, the boss, the company, and even the customers. Our expectations serve us like a yard-stick where we kind of measure people both ahead of time and after an event. We think we know what to expect of others and ourselves, so we check to see if all of that expectation is missed or met. What happens when our expectations are continuously missed? We turn grouchy, to start with. If our expectations are continually abused, it can become the catalyst of unrest and great unhappiness. Depending on your position in the company, you can bear down on the source of your missed expectations with unrelenting focus. We hate to be disappointed. The question is â€" Are your expectations realistic or are you a control freak? It’s good to be good, but it’s annoying to work with someone who wants to be perfect. Besides, it’s just not possible, so you could be unrealistic and also be a real pain in the backside. Here are some questions to ask yourself, as well as thoughts to help gauge your expectations: Are you clear about your expectations? Sometimes we have them, but we can’t exactly pinpoint what they are. If you can get clear first, you can examine them more closely. Did you manufacture your expectations without validation? Especially with others, we sometimes cook up expectations and fail to communicate to get an agreement. Is someone being inconsistent? One day they do things a certain way and the next day, they do them differently. You’re now confused and don’t know WHAT to expect. Time to ask. How do your standards compare to others? There is a fine line between wanting to be the best and being obsessive. Make sure you know where the bar is set for your peers to see if it is within a reasonable range of your own. Do you need to communicate your expectations? We often go about doing our work without really communicating what we need, when we need it and what details go with it. If you haven’t shared those details, you need to have a discussion. Are you getting feedback? You might need to calibrate what your expectations are with someone who can give you some objective feedback and understanding of your environment. Depending on your situation, you could do that with your boss; but if that isn’t an option, consider a respected mentor or peer. Don’t’ seek out your work BFF, as they won’t be objective or candid. Are they impacting your work or career? One sure way to know if your expectations are reasonable is if your work is being negatively impacted by someone else. It’s not unreasonable to expect others to meet quality, quantity, and deadlines as it relates to the work you do. If it turns out that you are being unrealistic about your expectations of others, you probably need to lighten up. If you don’t, you risk making yourself continuously unhappy and disappointed with those around you. It’s hard to feel any kind of kinship with the people you work with when you’re disappointed with their behavior. If your expectations are reasonable  but aren’t being met, then you have some work to do with others. It will be worth it in the long run if you do. The College Board SAT SAT, also known as the Scholastic Assessment Test is the test owned by the College Board, and is taken by high school students who plan to study in colleges and universities after high school in the United States. SAT test scores are reliable and valid and it analyzes the students academic knowledge in various sections. Students can take the general SAT test which consists of 3 sections, Critical reading, Mathematics and Writing, or they can choose to take the SAT Subject tests which are standardized tests in individual subjects. See what he had to say about his experience at University of Colorado Boulder: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or rural is the campus? Did you feel safe on campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Eric: Boulder is somewhat college-centric, and most of the student housing (which is also more expensive) is within walking or biking distance from campus. I preferred biking, and bike lanes were available on pretty much every street, as many avid bikers live in Boulder. The public transportation is readily available, and it is free for students. It can get people who live as far as the Denver suburbs to school on time, though it is a longer commute. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Eric:In my experience, the teachers are generally busy, but they are willing to schedule meetings with you. They are also always available during their mandatory office hours. Also, finding a research position is not that challenging if you are willing to reach out to professors, but some may give you seemingly insurmountable tasks and expect you to work completely autonomously. Others will act more as mentors it really depends on the professor. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Eric:Certain people enjoy dorm life. Students are required to live in the dorms during their first year, and the dorms range in quality. The dining options are good, and socialization is dependent upon the person, as it is in every other situation. Ultimately, I ended up living off-campus my second year and did not move back, as I found it to be cheaper than the dorms. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Eric:University of Colorado Boulder has a wide range of represented majors, as it is a large state school. As a Physics major, there were a massive amount of opportunities for students to engage in research, even with many national laboratories like JILA, NOAA, NIST, etc. As an English major, there were also many literature/poetry lovers throughout the school and wider community. I would say University of Colorado Boulder did a fantastic job of supporting my wide range of interests. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Eric:I made friends with my freshman dormmates, and I ended up living with them throughout all of college. Greek life is weak at University of Colorado Bouldercompared to other schools, and I did not participate in it. I found it easy enough to meet people and make friends. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Eric:I went once, and they gave me some valuable pointers on my resume. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Eric:At finals time, every study location tends to get crowded, but not overly so. During the semester, however, space is easily available. The library is a good place to study, as are lounges specific to major, dorm, laboratory, etc. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Eric:If you are a mountain person, there is no better place on earth. I came to University of Colorado Boulder in part because of the rock climbing; there were an overwhelming number of world-class options. For skiing, there are world-class resorts as little as an hour away. The town of Boulder is somewhat insular and homogenized in terms of worldview (liberal), but it is a great town to explore. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Eric:University of Colorado Boulderis a large state school. Expect to take some classes with more than 200 people. In the upper-division courses, the class size thins out. At least it did for Physics and English, though I hear more popular majors such as Psychology tend to have larger upper-division courses. I found this to my liking, particularly in Physics, where I got to know the other people well because we had many of the same classes throughout college. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Eric:In the course Writing to Know Poetry, my English professor was moved to tears by our class on the last day of the semester.
